I am terrible at picking out books at the library.
I go with good intentions, and often a list. But inevitably, because I make my books lists from online “best of” articles, the books I want are always checked out with a long reserved line.
So then I’m doomed to wander the aisles. This means that I end up choosing books by their spine design, which is sort of a poor man’s equivalent to judging a book by its cover.
But you know, something even better than spine or cover art is a compelling opening line. So I’m enlisting your help, readers, to help me choose between the 3 books I plucked off the shelves today, based solely on the first paragraph.
